Muscle spasms/tingling, left arm,shoulder,thumb

(8 discussions)

For about a month I have had muscle spasms on the top of my left shoulder from my neck to the shoulder socket (very painful), and also under my left arm in the back area next to my arm pit.
I also have tingling down my left arm to my thumb and forefinger.
The tingling feels like my arm has been asleep for hours and is waking up and is somewhat painful.
I have been to my doctor and she sent me to physical therapy but it is not working, getting more painful to where it is difficult to sleep.Any suggestions?

if your arm is tingling then I would say that there is bad ciralation in that area. It may be due to a pinched nerveor artery. I would definaltly go to the emergency room or a chiropractorDr. Josh

See a neurologist and have them test everything for nerve impingment, carpel tunnel syndrome, etc., etc. Also verify the PT regiment your PT is using is sufficient (the correct excercise regiment). Good luck and don’t give up or worry too much – simply insist that more evaluations, tests, and specialists are brought into the fold on finding you some answers/relief.

I experienced the above problem and had been seen by a couple of neurologists, xrayed and ultrasounded……..but nothing was wrong. I stopped taking my drugs for arthritis and it disappeared. Now it comes back again…. I presume this is caused by my other drugs that I take for BPH and high cholesterol…. I am not sure which is the actual cause. Now, I am trying to identify which drug causes the side-effect.

I have similar tingling and pain from the left shoulder to arm to hand and thumb, and have had lots of tests up to now. An MRI of the neck has revealed that I have a herniated disk at C4-C5 as well as disk protrusions and nerve impingment at C3-C4 and C5-C6. These are probably caused by various aggressive sports I’ve played, or old car accident whip-lash injuries. I did months of physio for shoulder pain to little avail. Then I started to get vertigo, while lying in bed and turning my head to the left or right, and started to wonder what that was all about. At first we thought it was BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo syndrome), but now it looks more like everything is related to the cervical problems. When I asked the Order of Physiotherapists to recommend someone who treated BPPV, in doing so, I stumbled on a physiotherapist who treats BPPV and also specializes in cervical injuries. Wow, what a difference, even after just 3 treatments. I would recommend you contact the Order of Physiotherapists (or equivalent in your area), and ask for a physio that specializes in cervical injuries, and who has specialized training in neck manipulation. Good luck !

My tingling, actually it was numbness, got so bad in my left hand I thought at times it was going to explode. I had a nerve conduction test which showed that I had nerve damage. My family Doctor wanted me to see a carpel tunnel specialist. However, I had been surfing the Internet and came to the conclusion that the problem was in my cervical area. I demanded an MRI of the cervical area and it showed 2 herniated discs in the C4-C5 area. The Doc who read the MRI said the two discs were millimeters from hitting my spinal cord. Two weeks later I was in surgery. One hour and forty minutes later I was in recovery. Was discharged the same day. It is classified as “out-patient” surgery. I then went through 8 weeks of physical therapy. I had this surgery in Nov. 2018,2 discs replaced, and I am pain free. Also, I started to play golf in April of this year, just 5-6 months after the surgery. Medical technology is at it’s best in this day and age. Oh, by the way, the numbness took 5 months to completely go away after the surgery, that’s how bad that nerve was pinched (damaged).
