Muscle tear between shoulder blades

(2 discussions)

Two years ago, while lifting a box, I tore the muscle between my right shoulder blade and mid-portion of the thoracic spine (I believe it was the T-4). Pain was overwhelming and caused my life to change. I could not sit, walk, lift anything, or push anything for a few months.

Eventually, after rounds of physio, my life was , somewhat, back to normal. That’s when I injured it again.

After sheer determination, I was able to get back to my daily duties. BUT – from time to time – I get a burning sensation that feels like someone is sticking a hot knife in my back and I lose my breath for an instant.

Can someone PLEASE tell me what’s going on?

I haven’t played ice hockey or baseball in two years, and it’s hard to be as idle as I am. I am thinking about seeing a chiropractor, but everybody that I talk to seem to have mixed feelings about it (50-50).

Does anyone know a person that has gone through this, and if so, what was the treatment/outcome?

    Hi bluestar,

Here’s what I think is going on: When you reinjured your rhomboid muscle a scar formed on it. Every time you overstretch that scar it tears (the burning sensation) and that sets you back a bit as you get a new scar.

I suggest going through another round of PT with a eye toward remodelling that scar tissue. This involves so gentle contractions and stretches done in high volume to gently stretch the random scar tissue into the normal orientation of the tissue in the area.

The right exercises should have you feeling much better in less than two weeks.

    Good luck,
    Muscledawg.

possible treatment may be accupuncture… I went to a physio after suppossedly dislocating my shoulder and he said with me it was muscle damage but I later found out it was ligament dameage and accupuncture seems to be helping the problem… if anything its worth a try…
