my son

My active 12 year old son has been complaining of heel/arch and ankel pain. He is in basketball season and during and after games he has a hard time walking due to the discomfort.
he has just started to complain this season….football and soccer with summer and fall he didn’t have any problems.
My husband says it is growing pains, is he right? Help what can I do for him, do I need to have him seen.
Thank you

Personally, I dislike the term “growing pain.” I do not believe that it should hurt to grow, and if it did, why isn’t it true for everyone?Without examining your son, I can’t be sure, but the first thing that comes to mind is possibly an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel or calcaneal apophysitis. Rest, ice, Advil or Aleve (if not allergic) heel cushions are entry level things to try. Otherwise, further evaluation by a podiatrist is indicated. Good luck.
