Never ending shin pains

(8 discussions)

i have had shin pain for almost 5 straight months. i have been through 2 rounds of pt, a pair of orthotics, a bone scan(negative), and much rest. none of this has worked. the orthotics made the pain worse, so i took them out. i also have knots all in my anterior tibialis. as soon as i get them massaged out, they return. i am so frustrated and ready to give up. i don’t know what else to do. i think i have tried everything i have heard of. help!!

    thanks, that sounds good.
what is making me frustrated is that the doc has me on meds and when i forget to take the meds for a couple of days, the pain comes right back. i don’t understand how i can have shin splints for so long. 6 months is like forever. but i don’t know what else it could be. they ruled out stress fractures and compartment syndrome.

    Hi guys,
I had moderate to severe shin-splints just a couple of months ago I play AFL semi-professionally so there is a lot of running involved plus the drought in Australia has made a lot of the grounds very hard so shin-splints is a common occurrence. What got ride of them for me was strapping my feet 24/7, sounds kind of dumb but it works! start with the tap in the middle of your foot on the top and go to the outside of your foot loosely then as you get to the middle of your foot on the bottom pull your arche up tighter, by pulling the arche up you relax the tendon that runs between the bone (which gets inflammed when you have shin splints). and try (if you haven’t already) getting a block of ice and using that to massage the knots out and rubbing it hard downt he inside of your shin….

does anyone have any more information. i’ve been away from home for almost two months for college and haven’t seen the doc. the meds are working, but only to an extent. everynight the pain seems to come back and when it rains, the pain is worse. i have no clue what is going on. and worse, when i talked to my doc on the phone, he said not to start exercising til he sees me in a month. i don’t know why he won’t let me start now. any thoughts? thanks

thanks, everyone, i have been lookin for some kind of info for almost 6 months, so its nice to hear some. my only question is, i went through physical therapy, which made my shins hurt worse, isn’t this like that? i don’t know. my doctor recently put me on an anti-inflammitory and it seems to be working, the pain has significantly cut back, so i’m now starting to do some exercise on the eliptical at my gym. again, thanks.

i agree with hiball, if your calves are too tight or large they can pull on the anterior part of tibia, i know this can generally cause anterior compartment, but it sounds like your muscle sheath is tight. Some myofacial releases may help.

You may have a muscle imbalance you need to build up the muscles in this area. Also try using a elastic band or an old cycle tyre and sit on the floor with feet straight out rap the band around the toes one foot at a time and stretch the band to give a slight resistance and move the foot round in circles change the direction every now and then this should help with your problem. When you start running again slowly increase your training a little at a time if you feel the pain coming back just bring back the training until you get used to it.

this is extremely frustrating. i just changed doctors and now they are trying to rule out anterior compartment syndrome. i don’t know where we are going to go after that or what the results of the tests are. if anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. the results came back negative and now the doctor is just trying to find an anti-inflammatory that helps. meanwhile, i had no choice but to increase my activity level, since school started again. now i am back in the same boat. my muscles are knotting, my shins hurt, and this is new, my ankles are starting to swell. i don’t know what to do, and rest isn’t an option since i have to climb hills everyday just to make it to my classes. i’m soo lost and i don’t have a clue. please help me.
    thanx.

I’m in the same boat. I began to get shin splints last year while running, so I did the prescribed treatment, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. They’d go away, only to return a week later. I quit running for almost a year, then began to do Parkour. Of course my shin splints got even worse. I just got done taking a month off, doing all of the excercises, icing everyday. Now, i’ve been back to running for a week, and lo and behold, the pain is back. It is very frustrating!!
