Next-day knee pain

Can anyone advise? I’m getting into running but lately have sometimes had bad knee pain the day after a run and for a few days afterwards, even when I felt no pain during the run. It can be in one or both knees and always involves pain under the kneecap, usually worse going down stairs. This time was the worst, as well as the usual pain during the day I also woke in the night with much more severe pain than usual and a tender spot on the inside of my knee, just below the kneecap, which disappeared today although the rest still hurts.
Can anyone suggest why this is and how I can tell if I am going to get the problem? The normal advice is always to stop running if it hurts, but I don’t get pain then so never know whether I am OK to continue a run or not.
I also used to get a similar problem (painful knees esp. when going down stairs) the day after mountain walking, but again there was no way to predict when I would be OK or when I would get pain the next day. The doc just said come back when I had the problem, which was difficult. Would that be the same thing?
Thanks
Zebra
