On going Rugby injury

No distinct moment in time caused injury, pain on lateral aspect of knee, near where the bursae is, very tight ITB, anterior drawer’s test positive, pain when squatting. Treated for ITB/bursitis initially as both inflammed, continued playing with strapping – was healing. Had 4 weeks off, first training session back – non touch rugby and it has come back – in a lot of pain.
Along side the knee problem, have a very painful ankle on the same leg. Pain is on lateral aspect of maleoli, pain on compression and it clicks with movements.
Are the two connected? Any ideas would be good.
Cheers

Tight I-T band responds well to self massage (for temporary relief post matches- grab the outside of thigh and strongly roll to the inside, best done when warm.)
Long term though, check for a tight groin / adductor, a lack of mobility at the hip (classic in Rugby)but also an imbalance in the range of movement compared to the other hip…one other thing to consider is pronation of the foot! (have you had a bad ankle sprain or foot pains?)
Alternatively if you do a lot of cycling or endurance work on your quads it could be muscle imbalance…..personally I’d start with improving my range of mobility around the hip and grion area through additional stretching after exercise…good luck
