Pain at patellar tendon insertion on tibia

(3 discussions)

Happened during a weekend session of weightlifting. I was doing weighted lunges where I set my stance and then lower myself (instead of started from a standing position and stepping out). Anyway, i can feel the tender spot when my leg is extended, my patellar tendon is relaxed and I press on that protrusion on top of the tibia. Is this tendonitis or is it just a strain? Any treatment tips?

thanks

Sounds like you are on your way to recovery! If it flares up again, ice it and try a day of rest. If it keeps giving you trouble, try visiting a sports medicine doctor.

Who would I go see? An orthopedist?

It’s not the kind of thing that hurts all the time. its actually only in a lunge type movement that i can feel it. I actually did some light squats today and I didn’t feel much of anything from that area. Thanks for the advice. I’ll keep icing it down and see if it goes away

If it happened suddenly, it is likely a strain. Tendonitis takes awhile to develop- sort of an overuse injury. If you strained it, it should be feeling better in 3-5 days. If not, go see someone about it. In the meantime, ice it a few times a day for 10 minutes each time and take some anti-inflammatories. See if that helps. Try not to do anything to further stress it while it is healing. Cefinitely stay away from the weights for awhile and when you do return, return gradually! Good luck!
