Pain behind knee

(4 discussions)

I’ve been running for about three years and I am currently training for a Marathon. Gradually, with increasing mileage I have developed a pain behind my left knee. The pain is close to the prominent tendons on the outer underside of the knee, but not involving those tendons, slightly more towards the interior and middle of the knee. The pain seems to run from this position on the back of the knee along the back of the outer thigh to about mid thigh.
The pain goes away while running.
The pain only comes hours after running or the morning after running. It can be felt while walking, or especially while standing with the knee fully extended. Could this be hamstring tendonitis? If not then what?

    John,
I have the same problem. Have you received any solutions? I just went to the doctor who prescribed Bextra, but didn’t offer much else. I feel frustrated. I have been (inconsistently)icing the back of my knee. I really want to start upping my mileage (I am very low — 3X week 4-5 miles, but I crosstrain on bikes, swimming, etc.).Any info you have received about this, I would be interested in hearing.
    thanks,Dawn

Hi, I have just started running again (mostly 3-5KM). I have had a history of shin splints (developed in college doing sprints)and they are now causing me more problems. I also have the outer knee pain in the back of the knee. I think that my pain is caused by overpronation. I have done some research and this seems like a likely cause. I have started wearing orthodic inserts and the pain is slowly going away. I hope this helps.
