pain behind the knee

I have a dull ache behind my knees and some pain when I squat.
It doesn’t bother me to walk… It seems to be the worst when I’ve been sitting (or sleeping)and get up. My knees are stiff and aching. I’m 45 and began working out several month ago, starting with a 30 minute aerobic class (bench blast) but I didn’t make the time to stretch either before or after the class since I had to bolt off to work.
I have since been walking & have worked up to 1 hour classes about 4 times a week. Can there be an injury with the hamstring where it attaches to the back of the knee?Is there anything I should avoid or do to help?

I have daily pain behind my patella from a baskeball injury in 2013. Twisted knee badly. When I try to run (1/2 mile) the pain behind my knee gets too intense. It feels like a horrible knee sprain.MRI was performed with no results. What should I do? Are there any test needed?
