Pain from removal of big toenail due to fungus

(2 discussions)

I just read some of your replys to people regarding toe fungus and Lamisil.
My podiatrist also told me there were a lot of side effects from lamisil and isn’t as effective as the removal of the nail (preventing spread to other toes) which is what we agreed to do.
It has been 3 weeks since removal and it is still very painful – does it get better? What do you suggest to help with the pain? Also, I was told my nail would not come back, do you agree?

There are some areas that could be debated for some time. Every patient should be individually evaluated. Ones health, blood work, confirmation of fungal infection, degree of understanding, potential compliance, ability to pay for this rather expensive medication if you have no insurance coverage are among considerations.Having said all that, for the years prior to having Lamisil which is really the best medication we have every had for fungal nails, an option for painful nails was the attempted permanent removal. The most common method (but not the only way) is to remove the nail and use phenol to kill the root of the nail so it does not regrow. Depending on ones health, age, circulation etc, it can take a number of weeks to heal over and the resulting skin to toughen up. I do not know what procedure your doctor did on you, but a simple phone call (or in person) should get you an answer.

I wish I had tried the lamisil pills before having the toenail removed because of the ongoing pain involved. My podiatrist tells me I just have to wait it out until the pain goes away. Do you have any other suggestions to help with the pain? Thank you for getting back to me.
