Pain in Hip

(4 discussions)

I’m new to this site but I’d really appreciate some help please. I am a female of 38 yrs and I used to be a bodybuilder (natural). Over the last 3 years i’ve gone though the detraining period and for the last 6 months I’ve not really done anything apart from dabble with light weights. Since Christmas, I’ve developed a pain in my left hip flexors. It gives me sharp pain if I put weight on that side & also on release. It doesn’t bother me to flex or extend the hip but inner & outer rotation also causes sharp pain . Abduction & adduction are OK. I origionally thought that it might be because I’d been abit slack on the exercise front so I started doing strengthing exercises but it seems to be getting worse. I’m qualified in sports massage but this has really got me stumped. I need someone who has had similiar/same or someone with more experience to help please.
Thanks in anticipation, Lulu

Sounds like you have a strained piriformis muscle, and a pretty ticked off one at that.

I suspect that it was a strain severe enough to cause some scarring which you inadvertantly keep tearing which accounts for why its hanging around so long.

I would suggest seeing a sports doc to get a proper eval of your symptoms. Once you get some PT to start the rehab process, I think youre all set with colleagues who can massage the sore area for you.

    Hope that helps,

You may know this strectch already, but it really helped me out. You are on your knees on the floor, ( preferably padded floor,), hands down too, take your right leg, slide it back slightly, then take your left knee and put it across the right leg, so you are sort of on your left hip / side of quadriceps area. Then slide the right leg back further, and lean down onto the left leg. This really hepled me. Hopefully this explains it clearly enough. if not, let me know, good luck !!

Hi, I am also new to this site. I think I have a similar problem but on the right side.

I have pain on my right side at the abdominal insertion point at the top of the pubic bone area just below where you would expect the appendix and have had it for several months. I am 40 and received this injury playing soccer. If I warm up well, I can get through a game, however the next day is bad news so I have stopped playing soccer until I can get over this. I have had ultasound and bone scan clearing me of hernia, muscle tears, hairline pelvis fracture and osteitis pubis. I have been referred to a specialist to rule out low grade appendicitis and then will be put on a course of cortisone injections.
In the mean time I will come back to this site to see what else is suggested to solve this situation.

    Regards
    Ross

If it hurts when you rotate try having a massage therapist look at TFL.
