Pain in leg – where thigh meets torso . . .

Hi, I am currently training for a marathon and sustained an injury last weekend while running an 18-mile training run. Basically I have experienced a pain right where the top of my thigh meets my torso. I am not sure if this is a hip, quad or groin injury — the pain is most severe in the front, rather than the inside part of my leg (acutally, it is VERY slightly off to the outside of my leg). I did run a little earlier this week despite the injury, and found that the pain was most severe when I first started running but after I warmed up it almost went away. At this point, however, I have stopped running as it hurts a lot even when I am just walking. It is particularly bad right after I have been sitting down, even for a short while. Please help — I am not sure if I should ice it, heat it, or what! Thanks!

    I am also a runner and have been experiencing pain that sounds alot like this for almost a year. It began suddenly and it hurts (kind of tight, almost burning sensation) in my groin and outer hip. It doesn’t hurt when I run but I pay for it after. Unfortunately, my doctor hasn’t found out why this is happening to me but I do have two bone cysts on my outer hip bone and that is what he thinks might be causing this problem. I would say, go to a sports medicine doctor and stop running. I continued to run and my pain only got worse and I think I made the problem chronic. I hope that you find out what is going on.

    If the a herniated disk is what is suspected a few exercises may alleviate the pain specifically extension exercises. you can go to sportsinjuryclinic.net look up back pain or herniated disc and there you will find extension exercises for your back.

    The pain that you describes sounds like a herniated nucleus pulposis with nerve impingement. If the pain is within the lower back one side or the other and you find that the pain radiates ie; burning, numbness, tingling down your leg to the knee or possibly down to the foot it definitely could be this. I agree you need to see a sports therapist. You will possibly need an MRI to see if the herniated disk is causing nerve impingement.

    tgere – I just read your post again. Just wanted to add that the pain in your foot is a bit suspicious for nerve pain, as one suggestion. One professional you could include in your search for a cure is a spine/back specialist. That is, if your you and your insurance are open to it. Otherwise, maybe you can get a referral from your gen. prac.

    Have you investigated things like pelvic stress fractures, osteitis pubis, etc.? Any history of disk problems??

    Maybe you need to take a closer look at the pelvic structure and look for problems there, imbalances included. Just a suggestion. I’m sure you are frustrated.

    Also, have you been to a sports medicine doctor, or just a general practitioner? I would suggest a sports med professional. They are more aware of sports injuries that perhaps gen. pracs haven’t heard of. Have you been to a good sports massage person?

    Good luck. Ongoing pain is very difficult. Doesn’t sound like this is going away with time. Have you ever tried giving your body a rest??

    I have what I would call similar symptoms, though it original showed up as groin pain. My problem began around September of 2002. In the winter of 2003 it got progressively worse, and then I took time off at the start of 2003. It never went away and I eventually started training again. What was originally a pain in my groin when moving became pain in my inner thigh, top of my thigh (around to the outside) and even my gluteus. This pain is not always in the same place, and is usually some type of burning sensation. Eventually, I started to get numbness in my foot as well. The Dr.’s have tested me and can’t find any “muscle damage”. I can run, and currently am competing in Football. But I do not train because daily activity makes it worse, and the problem is omni-present (I have felt “discomfort” every day since January). The Dr. also performed physical tests for hip damage, but said he could not find any signs.

    I am still looking for help on what this might be, and what can be done. Help!

    vmbri the pain only runs from thigh/torso area to knee. Sometimes during this pain i get numbness from knee to ankle only on front part of leg. Sorry should have been more clear in original msg. Thanks for your help im gonna visit site now.

    Shannon if the pain goes all the way down your leg it sounds like you may have a nerve problem as no muscle goes from the top of the thigh all the way down your leg.
    try and go to this site as it has quite a lot of info on sports injuries.

    hello i am 34 active female, not involved in running or lifting, however, i am in construction and for last five months or so, i have had pain where thigh meets torso, it has progressively gotten worse, i also, have most pain when i have been idle, pain seems to disappear when i get moving, i have no insurance and therefore, do not want to spend money on doctor if not required. Please help on how to alleviate pain, i have been wrapping with ace bandage, now that does not help anymore and i must work.
    thanks i hope u can help. also one note pain starts at thigh/torso area and runs down outter right side of right leg and sometimes from knee down to ankle on front of lower leg is completely numb.

    I am trying to picture where your pain is. I suggest you check out ostitis (also spelled osteitis) pubis. I also would pose the possibility of a hip flexor strain, although I don’t think you would be experiencing pain when sitting with a flexor problem. Or possibly you have a pelvic tilt (a lot of women do) throwing things off and giving you pain. Anyway . . .

    I am suspicious of the pain occurring even when at rest – which makes me think of things like osteitis pubis and stress fractures of the pelvis.

    If it were me, I would take anti-inflammatories, possibly ice the area, rest or cross train for now and contact a sports med doctor and/or physical therapist PRONTO so you can get back to training for your event or keep resting and healing. Good luck!
