pain in metarsal(?) region of right foot

My right foot seems to pronate considerably more than my left. This seems to be the cause of pain on the left side of this [right] foot especially during my favorite activities: trail running and strenuous hiking in the mountains. Is there an orthotic device that would helpcompensate the straddling of the foot to the outside so as to reduce or relieve the pain?

You are on the right track, as far as I can tell from your description, I would agree that an orthotic would be your best bet. But I would suggest you get an evaluation from a podiatrist with your hiking boots.
