Pain in upper back after squats, overhead presses

I just began lifting again after a break of almost a year. I have a pain in my upper back after doing overhead presses and squats. It’s a dull ache a couple of vertebrae below where I normally have the bar on a squat (I have the bar high on my traps – bodybuilding style squat). I can feel a sharper pain when I turn my neck either way, and its very difficult to bring my head down to my chest without pain. Is it possible to have a slipped or herniated disk that high up in the back? What else would cause this type of pain?
