Pain left inside area of foot/ bonescan

In January I twisted my ankle while walking my dog. It hurt, and swelled a little. Not bad. Since then, it’s gotten worse and worse. Swelling, and I can’t turn my foot w/o experiencing big time pain. Went to the ortho last Wed. he x-rayed it, and ordered a bone scan w/o telling me why. What does a bone scan show that an x-ray won’t? Am kind of concerned, not to mention hurting. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

A bone scan will show radioactive uptake in an area that is undergoing greater bone turnover than the rest of the bone. Examples can include fractures, infections and tumors. Some fractures are difficult to see on a plain x-ray film.
