Pain on outside of foot from non-impact exercise ?

Anyone know what pain on the out and underside of my right foot may be after non-impact exercise ?

I’m about to get a set of insoles made for my shin-splints but thought I’d do some non-impact exercise to keep me going, i.e. rowing – cross-trainer & stepping machines in the gym. I’m fine starting off but after a couple of sessions my right foot goes partially numb when working out and then it can be painful to weight bear after that point (Usally ok after a week) – So obviously I’ve stopped doing the non-impact stuff for the moment.

This has been happening since I had ankle injury 20 months ago which was corrected with an orthotic – The pain occurrs with or without the orthotic although a lot worse without.

Hopefully my new orthotics will enable me to run again and I can kiss goodbye to the stepping machine but anyone have any ideas on what it might be ?
