Pain on outside of the knee

I play football (soccer) and after playing experience a pain on the outside of leg adjacent to the knee. This seems to be as a result of use rather than impact. The pain tends to subside after a weeks rest but comes back after playing. There is no pain or tenderness to the touch or any swelling. The pain is felt most when going down stairs whilst the knee bends, or simply swinging the knee. Any help would be appreciated!
