Painfull calves (3) Hi there, recentley i have been seeing a physio about my calf muscles, whenever i walk anywhere my calves become very tight like they are […]
You may be experiencing what the term intermitent exertional compartment syndrome. This is a process where by the muscle tissue which is surrounded by a thick fascia become ischemic (lack of oxygen) secondary to the fixed amount of space within the muscle group and the increased swelling that occurs secondary to increased blood flow. This swelling causes increased intra-compartment pressure which leads to decreased blood flow and as a result a relative lack of oxygen. The pain only subsides with ceasing activity and elevating the affected extremity. In order to prevent this you may need to see a orthopedist. Make sure you are stretching appropriately and not getting back into running to quickly. Take it slowly. It may ultimately require a fascitomy which is releasing the fascial tissue surrounding the muscle compartment group involved. _________________
