Pain, sides of heel

I have long suffered from chronic heel pain, not the usual achilles (back of heel)or bottom of heel but on the sides…

There is mucho swelling on the sides and if you look at my running shoes there is wear pattern on the side portions of the heel box. I have even gone so far as to remove a portion of the stuffing or cushion material on the sides of the heel to give my heel more room and prevent chaffing and rubbing. I ice after every run, and do MILD stretching also, anti-inflammatories have limited success in alieviating discomfort.

I’m a triathlete who averages 20/25 miles a week running, favorite shoe in the original Saucony Shadow 6000, shoes with great flexibility in forefoot seem to be best. Stability shoes tend to be too tight in heel box.

Any thoughts as to whats wrong and a solution.
