patella fracture

(5 discussions)

why does it take so long for the patella to heal? most bones take 4-6 or 6-8 weeks to heal. Why is the knee cap any different? I recently had a patella injury, and I heard one of my favorite basketball players had a patella injury also, and I was just wondering why it takes so long to get back to normal and does a fractured patella affect my speed, virticle jump or my agility in the future?

How is your knee now? I had my fractured patella tension band wired a week ago. I was wondering how much movement you have now. Also how long were you in plaster?

What sort of fracture did you sustain and how was it reduced? I suffered a transverse fracture playing hockey 4-5weeks ago and have had it tension band wired together. I understand that the patella can heal in 6-8wks & although still in a splint & using crutches am doing ok.With physiotherapy and planned rehab to build your strength and range of movement of the knee back there is no reason why your basketball should suffer – nor should my hockey!Good luck Derek.Helen

I fractured my knee cap in January 2012 – no operation was performed – I was put in a brace for 6 weeks.Last week I had to have an operation – supposedly to have loose bits of bone removed – but ended up having the back of my knee cap shaved as it had grown back with a lump under the knee cap. Has anybody else suffered problems afterwards : : What sort of fracture did you sustain and how was it reduced? : Ouch – they hurt, don’t they!!! Just broke my knee about 4 weeks ago… don’t need surgery but the cast is annoying! I had teh cast on for 2 days nd I got an immense pain at the back of my leg, had another cast on and the pain is from my knee – I can bend it a bit!!! I’ve no idea about when I can walk / run / cycle again but as soon as this cast is off – you can gaurantee I’ll be out & about!!!

Two days ago I fell heavily on my knee. The pain is quite severe and an X-ray indicated “a fracture of the patella with minimal displacement”.Several years ago an identical fall caused a fracture very similar to the above. On this occasion, a special knee brace was used and walking…particularly in water…recommended.Unfortunately, I developed cellulitis and finished up bedridden for about a week and prescribed antibiotics.Should I commence antibiotics IMMEDIATELY to prevent infection setting in? If so, what antibiotic would you recommend?Yours sincerelyHarry Gunzburg
