Patella Tracking

(2 discussions)

Due to pain experienced in my knees when I run and hike I visited an othopedic surgeon. After several visits I was told that my patella is tracking incorrecly.
I was told that it tracks outwards as it moves upwards. I was told that this causes inflamation in the tendon below the tendon as it rubbes across the joint.
I was given a stretching and weight routine that never seemed to eliminate the pain.
I have had to give up running for several years and am now overweight.
I would desperately like to run again.
I was wondering if there was a knee brace designed to provide the support I need to force my patella to track more correctly and/or helps to reduce the inflamation that results from imporoper tracking. As I review knee braces I see medical terms that I don’t understand.
What key words am I looking for to find the correct type knee support that I am looking for (if it exists)? Thanks for your help!

Sorry kevin, but there probably isn’t a brace to alleviate that condition. I have the same problem. The ortho told me surgery can reverse the condition, but otherwise I need to just strengthen it (the physical therapy won’t probably alleviate any pain, but will help prevent dislocation of the platella)It hasn’t stopped me, though. I’m in karate 3 times a week, and only hav minor problems. The best thing I ever did was to get a cryo-cuff for use after a strenuous workout. Those things are AMAZING. I got one 10 years ago (when I dislocated my platella) and it’s been my best friend….well worth the money.

I am amazed that you don’t seem to have found a good Physical Therapist (Physiotherapist here in Canada) who can give you the correct exercises to alleviate this problem. It must be treated early on for the best results and you don’t say how old you are but I have excellent results with all but the longest standing cases of this tracking problem or Patello-Femoral Syndrome. You need to strengthen the inner thigh muscle just above the knee to the point where its ratio to the outer muscle is 4 : : As I review knee braces I see medical terms that I don’t understand.
