pectus {chest wall deformity}

(7 discussions)

Hi, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has had to deal with a chest wall deformity called pectus caranatum. My son was diagnosed in September and we would like to hear from someone who has decided to live with their pectus as opposed to having the repair. We believe Nicky’s case is mild but have no preliminary tests done yet to back that up. I’d appreciate any information anyone may have. Thanks, Michele

    I have designed and use a brace for kids with pectus carinatum along with an exercise program. It works well!

    I have this its not as bad well mine isnt I’ve been in fights played football in highschool and now I’m bout to join army infantry/airborne to be exact I’m 19 years old and this hasn’t affected me much I work out alot push ups sit ups free weights and a bowflex even but my pectus is still noticable on occasion the thing that helps most is taking a hot bath and when I get out I put weights on chest where pectus is noticable the warm water helps the cartalage? (wich is the reason it sticks out and the surgeries I hear leave a vicious scar right in middle of chest and not only painful but the kids can’t play or live there childhood and mostlikely wont be able to play sports) become soft so you can work with it kinda like wax I suppose hard to mold heat it up and it molds to whatever you want but for the younger kids I don’t recomend what I do. I suggest maybe after a warm bath you lay them on back and see where it sticks out most and press on it just a tiny bit every day little more each time till it become barely noticeable but remember it will always be there no matter what I sit in saunas for hours at a time with weights on chest it helps with breathing to cause your lungs have to lift all that weight but after the pressure treatment I usually take a cold shower or put ice on chest real fast kinda like metal working. Heat up cool down process makes the metal harder and not as brittle to say if u were to get a surgery done it would look nice but if your kid got hit with a baseball in the chest or played football and got tackled the wrong way then..
    well you get the idea email me if you have any questions sorry for typos its kinda late here but I hope this helped even though its long as hell goodluck

    Mam. Michele. I am a 14 year old boy with pectus Excavatum. Opposite to your son’s, his goes OUT right? my collapses in. I deal with mild lung problems at school’s gym and wrestling. I do have a lowered self-esteem from this chest problem. But I have good friends that support me and get me through. If its mild like mine I say (living with it too) that if the doctor says its not a huge problem that he should go for it. I think god made him the way he should be. His chest says “HEY IM NICKY AND I LOVE THE WAY I AM.” I’m glad to see normal people with the same problems. =) OH and hey! my mom’s name is MICHELLE. two L’s. cool huH!? have a nice day.

    I was diagnosed with Pectus Caranatum a few months ago. I did some research and since I am still growing, I can wear a brace to get if fixed. Long Story short, I got a brace and I am wearing it right now. I have only been wearing if for 3 days, so there isnt any huge improvements, but the doctor said it should be noticably gone in about a month, but I have to wear it until I am done growing for it to work permanently. I would consult your doctor if you want this brace. It has a great success rate, and I don’t even have to wear it to school! 🙂
