Physical Therapy Schooling
(11 discussions)
I would like to pursue a career in physical therapy. To me it seems like it would be a challenge, but with great rewards. I have done a bit of research on this career, but a lot of the web sites that I went to didn’t give me a straight forward answer on how many years you have to go to school.
I am hoping that you can give me that answer.
How many years of college and training do most physical therapist have to go through? Thank you for the help, Whitney Frisbey

Whitney...these days most PT programs are a masters and require 5 years. Call a college that has a PT program and ask them to send you a brochure about the program. That will tell you all the prereq's you need and what the program entails. It's tough, but very worth it! Good luck, Mya

Dear Solynthia, I appreciate your efforts to purse a career in this highly regarding profession. Please make sure that whether you have a high degree of compassion, patience and strong interpersonal skills as these are the 3 most important pre-requisites for this profession. The duration of physical therapy degree various from country to country. Since I don’t know your native, I am listing a few of the countries PT program 2. In united states, things are changing day by day, because of the APTA’s vision 2020. Physical therapy, by 2020, will be provided by physical therapists who are doctors of physical therapy”. Hence, they have closed an entry level bachelor’s program. They have only entry level masters program. In fact, most of the universities are switching themselves to entry level D.P.T program (which is 3 + 3 year). Ideally it would take 6-7 years to complete a doctorate program and 5 years to complete masters entry level program. If you have already done your bachelor’s (any field) it would take 1 and 1/2 to 2 years to complete your masters program. In U.K., it is a 3 year Honors program (bachelors degree) In australia and newzealand it is a 4 year program after high school. I hope this answers your question. If you have any doubts please feel free to contact.Regards Chandramouli Krishnan, Head Physiotherapist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
