Planter’s Fibroma

(3 discussions)

Hi my name is Stephanie. I have a bump on my foot which hurts pretty bad. I went to a foot doctor and I was told I have a Planters Fibroma. They told me to ice it daily and were sneaker which I have been doing. It does not seem to be getting better. I was told the next step is a cortizone shot which I know will hurt. After that if it still hurts I have to get it removed. Should I just get it removed instead of getting the shot. Also I was told I would get hammertoes. I don’t want hammertoes. What is the percentage of someone getting hammertoes after the surgery and are there any other side effects. Thank you for your timme.

A shot of cortisone does not have to be as horrible as patients think. I will numb the area with a local anesthetic first, then inject the cortisone. As far as surgery goes, your doctor is following the standard most would. The plantar fibroma has a significant rate of reoccurrence. I do not know of any statistics relating to the occurence of hammertoes after this procedure. Most fibromas are on the medial band of the plantar fascia and therefore not really in line to affect the toes.

I’ve had three injections without any pain killers and they hurt less than any injection I’ve had at the dentist. But hold on – cortizone isn’t as useful in treating platar fibroma as orthotics are. To boot, orthotics don’t mean injections with agents banned by most sports. And I’m not talking about any old orthotic – the best ones (in my long foot pain experience) are made custom for your feet and include a rubber covering to decrease the impact on your fibroma. Email me if you want to know which doctor helped me out with this.
