playing with a jammed finger

Yesterday, when trying to catch a basketball, I jammed my finger. Although there is less mobility in the finger, I am still able to play basketball and will do so in tommorrows tournament. However, can playing with a jammed finger have permanent effects on the finger? Should I tell the coach that I can’t play?
