pop in calf muscle

(6 discussions)

I have felt a “pop” in my left calf (in the belly of the muscle) muscle twice in the last month.
The first time I was walking and the second time I was rebounding for one of my girl’s on my bball team (I am a HS coach). I stretch my legs before activity, but when this pop happens, it about drops me to the floor.
There is no discoloration/bruising or major swelling afterwards.
I just can’t walk in a normal gait for a week.
I ice and take NSAIDS for the pain.
I am tired of this and can’t afford this problem because our basketball season is about to start.
What could be the problem? How can I remedy this?

I have the same thing and right now can barely walk on my calve muscle. I felt a big pop in my calf muscle and it floored me as well. It has been coming on for months now.

Susan -Just had the same happen yesterday morning. After wrapping with an ace bandage, I get some support while walking. But walking my dog this morning (wrapped up) it popped again, just not as violently as yesterday. Wish someone would tell us what’s going on…

I JUST FOUND THE ANSWER ON THE INTERNET…Just cut/paste the following address:At the time of injury, you may actually hear or feel a pop inside your calf the sound of the muscle tearing, or shearing away from the Achilles tendon. … http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/9339/31318.html – Cached

About 3 weeks ago, I reached for a ground ball and while stepping hard to my left, thought someone shot me in the calf (i actually turned around to look for a sniper!). Leg collapsed under me and I had to be carried off. One plaster split and crutches later, I could walk again with a fairly normal gait and all looked well. Orthopaedic surgeon checked it out and found I could flex in either direction pretty well. One week later, I decide to play again – one step jogging towards first base, I feel the tightness and throbbing pain like the onslaught of a swelling balloon. Three days later and now the calf is the size of a grapefruit and a discoloration and bruise has appeared. ANY IDEAS??

I play netball and have suffered 3 calf injuries over the last two years. I too hear that pop when the calf muscle goes. The first time it took around 8 weeks to be able to walk again normally. Currently I am a week into recovering from it having happened again. I go to great lengths to stretch before and throughout the match. I am totally frustrated with this and would love to know why I am prone to this injury. Is there anything I could do prevent this from happening again? Are there any supplements or physio that I could try as a preventative measure? Many thanks.
