protruding floating ribs

(7 discussions)

My floating ribs on my left side protrude quite a bit from the others.
It is quite noticable if I am lying on my back, and makes lying on my stomach uncomfortable at times.
Primarily, does this indicate a problem? Either way however, is there something I can do to fix it?

I was told by the doctor I had a floating rib, but was unsure what it was. It is on my left hand side and is quite uncomfortable to sit and lie in certain positions. Is there anything that can be done about it??

Dear Kandra, I have the exact same problem! I have been to many doctors over the past few months and still have no answer. They x-rays showed nothing wrong with the spine or the ribs. I also had an ultrasound that showed nothing wrong. However, my doctor can definitely see the ribs sticking out on my left side. She has refered me to an orthopaedic specialist to see if they can figure this out. This problem started four months ago, so I wasn’t born with this. I will let you know what the specialist says.

Glad to hear someone else has the problem, mine is on the right side and has been a problem since I gave birth to my son 2 years ago. He was a very large baby (10 pounds) I have had x-rays, catscans, ultrasounds all said I was fine. It took a massage therapist to mention “floating rib” she thought the ligaments it was attatch too might be torn or stretch due to the pregnancy causing it to move around. if anyone has anything that helps, please contact me.

Interesting… I just came from an ultrasound to check on a lump protruding from the bottom of my right rib cage. My doctor thought it was a fatty tumor so he sent me to a specialist who couldn’t decide if it was a hernia or a cyst. The ultrasound technician seemed to think a floating rib (something I’d never heard of) made sense to her. Now that I’m researching it online it seems to make perfect sense. How did they miss this straightforward diagnosis? What can be done about it? I agree that it’s annoying and uncomfortable when I lay on my stomach.
