PT after broken femur?

(2 discussions)

This is an off-beat question, I know, but I want to get it right: I’m writing a novel in which one of the characters has suffered multiple fractures in her right femur after an auto accident.
She leaves the hospital after a couple of surgeries, with pins in her leg and a full hip-to-foot cast.
What sort of physical therapy exercises would she be instructed to do for the remainder of her recovery?I’m happy to go read more on wikipedia or do a google search or whatever, I just haven’t the faintest idea of even what to search for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Well, post surgery for multiple (R)femur fractures with pins and a full leg cast, she would be non-weight bearing on that (R)leg. She would need gait training and instruction for mobility with crutches or a walker. Therapeutic exercises would include (R)hip abduction/aduction and (R)hip straight leg raises. The therapist would probably need to initially assist the patient with these movements of the (R)leg and progress towards active independent. Also, the (L)leg would need general strengthening exercises.

Well, usually they do not put casts on if they put in pins and plates, but that’s beside the point. The exercises I would have someone do is straight leg raises, move leg in and out while lying on their back. They can do standing exercises with the hurt side…kick leg forward, then out to the side, then back. I would do 10-20 reps of each. However, these are pretty advanced exercises…like 10 days post injury. You may try a search for femur fracture rehab or something like that.
