pulled/torn calf muscle

(6 discussions)

I pulled/tore a calf muscle one week ago. It swelled up to +1/2 size from the knee to upper ankle. Swelling has gone down as well as discoloration, although it is still very sore. I’m wondering if I need to wait until the pain is completely gone before I begin exercising.

Jim,The simple answer is obviously “YES”! My suggestion, however, would be for you to be seen and evaluated by a Physical Therapist or MD. If you do not feel the injury is serious, and you improve rapidly and consistantly, then you might want to use ice and gentle stretching daily. After the swelling has began to resolve, you can switch to using heat…especially warm tub soaks, followed by gentle stretching. Do not try to jog until you can walk w/o pain. When you can jog w/o pain, you can try light running. Progress along these lines, and stop whenever you feel any pain. I would also recommend you take Advil for the pain and inflammation, and use ice whenever you have any future soreness following exercise. Let us know how you are making out, and good luck.

Hello I have also torn a calf muscle and am lost. My doctor didn’t prepare for what was going to happen. Excruciating pain when I stood up from the blood going down to the nerve endings. Then cramping of mucles. Total brusies. My back is killing me from laying in bed. I am just now walking on crutches without crying. My Orthopedic doctor didn’t tell me anything and did not prescribe a physical therapist. What do I do next, it’s been nine days. When will I beable to walk? Thanks Fran

I tore my calf muscle in a football game a few weeks ago. My doctor at first thought it was a deep bruise. Once the swelling went down he realized that it was torn. I have been getting these treatments that have to do with electronic shocks put into my leg and I was told to keep strectching my leg. Is there anything else I can do.

I injured my calf muscle on March 7, 2015 in a company league basketball game. I iced it through the night until I saw my doctor the next day. He said I had a medium tear of two different calf muscles. He had me wear a hard plastic boot. Told me not to walk, run, or jump with my leg and he wanted me to see a Physical Therapist asap. Today will be my first appointment so I don’t know what to expect or what they will do. For all of you who are still hobbling around. Go see your doctor (if you trust them), to check for serious injury. If you are a guy don’t be a macho man thinking you will be a girly man if you go for help. Anyway, I’ll pass on any information I get from my therapist and how it helped me. Summers coming and I want to have fun in the sun!
