radial head implant

(2 discussions)

I broke my radial head on 12 July while stationed in Iraq. I have an implant in and still do not have full ROM or strength. I was wondering what exercises I can be doing to help with the recovery. Thank You

i also broke my radial head in march of this year. had radial head replaced and couldn’t move hand palm up or down afterwards. wore two arm braces where you crank the hand over. that didn’t work and 7 and a half months later, had surgery again and had first implant removed because bone growth had formed around the implant thus making it impossible for me to use the hand. doctors cut more bone off and put in a longer, smaller head implant. now can move the hand again almost normal. been in physical therapy since march. only can’t seem to get all the strength back in the arm. am lifting 5 pounds weights and using stretch cords for excercises. guess it will be a slow progress, but progress is happening. so, just keep moving the arm every chance you get……good luck

God Bless You! I know exactly what you are going through (at least with the elbow!). I shattered my right radial head 10 years ago in a roller blading mishap (the problem was I should have never been on roller blades!). I have had 5 operations with the 5th being the radial head implant. That was done in 1999 and I am still suffering from lack of range of motion, cronic pain, loss of strength and muscular damage. Half of the doctors say to exercise it and the other half say to baby it. At this point, I just rarely use my right arm – I lost my job due to inability to keep up with demand and have been unable to sustain employment since. Please let me know how your experience has turned out. I pray that your arm is more functional than mine!
