Random severe migrains caused by neck problem.

(2 discussions)

Every so often, my neck sems to lock up, then I get a pressure buld up, at the left side of my skull, next to the neck, but just under the skull bone, which (if I don’t pop my neck) eventually results in a severe migraine, this condition only affects the left side of my neck, I don’t even have to use my hands to pop my neck, all I have to do is to tip my head to the right slightly, whilst moving my back to the left, then a series of pops can be heard from the top of my neck to half way down my back, If I keep my head in a forward possition for to long, my neck locks up, and if I move my head in any direction, as soon as I start to move it, the pop is so great, that my eyes jerk with the intense pop. Also it doesn’t matter which way I turn my head there’s a constant gravel sound in any direction, which sounds like it’s coming from the base of the skull where it meets the top of the neck. What can be the cause of this?, I don’t have a hectic lifestyle, so stress is out of the question.

    Terry,
Chiropractic care would be a wonderful option if you have not tried it. The grinding sound you hear is likely caused from two joint surfaces rubbing together. What is your age? X-rays would rule this in or out. Why does the popping of your neck seem to help? When it “pops,” there is a natural release of the body’s natural pain killers. This leads to a sense of release. However, the pain usually returns in a short time.
Why would Chiropractic help? Because it sounds like you need a specialist to find the actual spinal vertebrae that is out of alignment, causing the headaches. By self adjusting yourself, you only allow a temporary relief, but the problem is still there! A trained chiropractor will be able to locate the exact vertebrae/s that is causing the problem, and adjust it. You should have a longer lasting relief of symptoms. I have a patient who had migraines for 8 months before I treated her. After 2 months of treatment, she was headache free. She rarely gets headaches now, and comes in immediately if she feels one begin.
