Re occuring Knee problem – advice please

(2 discussions)

Hi there fellow knee sufferes.
I am new to this forum only because im a looking for some feedback regarding my knee prob.
I have been playing ice hockey for around 16 years which is where my original injury occured. A opposing player fell against the outside of my right knee making it collapse inwards. I heard a loun pop, had swelling, lack of movement and instability. I let it heal for a few weeks and went back to my sport.
^ months later while playing football i twisted it and suffered the same symptoms as above. This time i went to the hospital and had an arthoscropy the next day which showed up a small tear in my ACl ligament. Fibres of it were cut away and i was left to heal.
Over the last 4 years i have 6 repeat injuries all bringing about the same symptoms of poping sound, swelling, instability and pain.
I am now scheduled to have another arthoscopy in just over a week.
Anyone got any feedback as to what I have done?? will i need reconstruction surgery??
I have had to quit all sports now as i cannot do any of them without hurting my knee!!

Thanks

Matt

Thanks for your feedback, I was worried that might be the case myself.
Its kinda weird cause every time I have injured my knee I have a 6-7 week period of it being real painful, then after a while the initial pain goies and im just left with pain when I bend fully, kneel or try and tense my leg muscles. I mean I can walk in a straignt line, even when carrying heavy objects, ok so this builds my confidence and i try to use it normally again.
Then low and behold it blows again!
I was just wondering if anyone elses’ knee probs occur like this.

From your history, it sounds like you might not have much of your ACL left. Have you considered getting an MRI before going through with the arthroscopy? With an MRI, your orthopedic surgeon would have a better idea of what is going on with out traumatizing your knee further. If a reconstruction is warrented, it would be best to hold off on the scope and just go through witht he reconstruction. The more times the knee is opened up, the great chance that there will be complications.

ACL reconstructions used to be quite a big deal, now they are routine. The surgical technique had advanced greatly, and great results are possible. I work with a very aggressive OS who allows immediate weight bearing w/crutches for the first week, then no crutches. An immobilizer is used for the first two weeks. We are allowed to use an extremely accelerated rehab, and the athletes can normally start jogging around 2.5 to 3 months. Depending on the sport they can return to full competition around 4 to 5 months.
