(6 discussions)

Pulled my left hamstring playing rugby on saturday – I have pulled my right hamstring 3 times 5 years ago – now my left has gone,
can anyone give me advice on how to prevent this injury happening again? I am seeing a physio at the moment but any more advice would be appreciated
Thanks

it might be coming from a lower back/pelvis imbalance. I would suggest two things…
    1. start mobilizing and stretching your lower back more.
and 2…Start asking around for a good osteopath. Remember word of mouth is the best advertisement, anyone can pay for an ad in the paper.

Although hamstring strains differ greatly in their severity, the average hamstring strain probably takes 4-6 weeks to fully repair, rather than the 2-3 weeks that most people think. Most players can come back before full repair by running with a slightly decreased stride length on the injured side. This takes a tiny edge off speed but protects the injured hamstring. Players who often suffer recurrences are ones who probably dont know how to subconsciously make this gait adjustment. Although it is only a theory, players who have a large number of recurrences are likely to have a degree of nerve entrapment as an underlying factor. This is difficult to prove, and at this stage, even more difficult to reverse.

I have ruptured my hamstring completely. Nightmare really but have continued sport.
Check that your hips and pelvis are in line – try a Chiropractor

first question should be do you stretch properly? hold ur stretches and dont bounce. hold them for about 12 seconds. i pulled my hamstring my Sr year of high school during track running hurdles in the snow. it was right below my ass it hurt really bad. not much you can do for it but stop the sports activities, let it heal, and strengthen it at the same time. i still ran hurdles that yr but i didnt practice and i still led my team to the championship and i got gold in the 110 hurdles, but let me tell it hurt so bad. i fell in states. probably why i have leg problems now.

    what is a gait analysis?

You might want to consider having a gait analysis done. Some abnormal gait patterns put you at increased risk for hamstring injuries. Often, orthotics are all that is needed to correct the problem.
