relapsing-remitting MS treatment

I was wondering how PT treatment planning would differ between a patient diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS and a patient diagnosed with progressive MS? Are there any key differences other than the greater likelihood of return to baseline function (with RRMS)? Thanks!

Good question Kristi. As a PT, I would look at the time between relapses (with RRMS) and at the severity of a patient who has progressing MS. In all respects, MS is a progressive neuromuscular pathology. Regardless of the sub-type, the patient will not usually get back to original baseline function. While PT should focus on restoring a person’s function, there are some times when adaptation and compensation might be the only options at the time. But, to stop dodging the original question, I would just re-assess my MS patients every time I see them. This gives me the best idea of where they are on that day, since there are definitely good days and bad.Hope this helps and makes sense. 🙂
