retro-calcaneal bursitis?????

(2 discussions)

Hi.
Is retro-calcaneal bursitis and achilles tendinits, caused by each other. I am so confused. Apparently I have both, and i’ve done some searching and they keep coming up together but I can’t figure out why they are referred to as practically the same thing. Every site I go to says “achilles tendinits/retro-calcaneal bursitis” as if they are the exact same thing. What exactly is retro-calcaneal bursitis caused by? Also is pressing on the bursitis bad, my athletic therapist has been using manual techniques and pressing on it very hard, which is extremely painful. I never even knew I had pain in the bursa area untill she started pressing on it.

Retro= in back ofCalcaneal= heel bonebursitis= inflammation of the either naturally occurring bursa or adventitious oneThe shape of the back of the heel, the shoes and activity you do and tightness of the achillies tendon all play a role. The treatment of both achillies tendonits and a retrocaklcaneal bursitis can overlap. Sometimes in severe cases, surgery is indicated. I am not sure pressing on this is a great idea, but I haven’t examined you. Was this diagnosed with a MRI or sonogram?

It wasn’t diagonsed with either, she basically just pressed out that area of the foot and noticed how much pain I was in so she told me that that is what I had. I did however, have a ultrasound for my achilles tendon to make sure it wasn’t torn, which it wasn’t. Also, I don’t have pain right in the back of my heel, its on either side of the heel, furthur in toward the ankle bone
