Ribs

How long does it take for ribs to heal or should I say, just plain “feel better”.
She is 84yr. and usually does not complain much.
It is hard for her to talk, breathe and can’t cough.
Is there anyhing she can do to ease her discomfort………….

Marsha,Did she get an X-Ray to rule out a fracture? If so, and it was negative, then ice packs and anti-inflammatory medications are the best things that she can do at home. She needs to ask her doctor about which medications she should be using, and how often. Also, he doctor can probably order her a “Rib Support” strap, which can offer relief by keeping down any excessive movements of the ribs with breathing or walking. [Some people can get by with using a plain Ace Bandage, but she should ask her doctor first]. Rib Contusions, especially with a person her age, can take several weeks to fully heal, but the support, medications, and ice packs should help with the pain, and also help to speed the healing rate. Please let us know how she makes out.
