Right leg pain

(2 discussions)

From my right hip to my knee I have a sort of tearing pain, the skin at the front of my leg is numb(I can have pins put in my leg and feel no pain)
About 2 years ago I was doing thrust squats (right leg forward until my left knee touched the floor, with about 30kilos on a squat bar on my shoulders)
I felt a tearing pain in the side of my right leg and stopped exercising the pain has not healed in this time, the pain is more intense if I sit in one position for too long.
I have been to the doctor and had back x-rays but nothing has been found(the doctor says theres nothing wrong, then why does it still hurt)
I have had some sports massage with some success but VERY limited.
ANY advice would be appreciated,as long as it doesnt involve creams(I’ve tried them ALL,they smell okay but are completely useless)
I am 50 years old, fairly healthy and fit,not over weight, eat a very balanced diet, dont take any perscription drugs or excess vitamins,NO Steroids and never have, exercise regularly(3-4 times a week)

    Thanks Mikew,
I’ve never had any problem with my knees(even after doing Judo for 30 years and all the drop throws)
But you are right it was a tearing pain in the side of my right leg,the pain has been sort of in the back ground for sometime now,it doesnt stop me exercising though,I’ve been to my doctor and he wasnt a lot of good,he sent me for an x ray on my back and a prescription for some cream.
I had a few massages when I was in Thailand and they did help.
It gets worse if I’m not doing any thing when I’m sitting down.
I viewed the link you sent as well,it mentions streching,HOW do you stretch the side of you leg?
The exercise I was doing was lunges with a barbell across my shoulders,I have done them for years along side squats and leg press,it was just this one timeI went lower than I intended.
How would I get the number of a good sports massuer?
I live in West London (near Heathrow)if that’ll help
But many thanks for the information

The exercises you did sound exceptionally dangerous. I would have expected your knee to be badly damage first.

A sharp pain can indicate a tear. Pain on the outside of the thigh may be due to a damaged iliotibial band.

I believe Sports massage to be the best way of treating tears in the long run. The length of time an injury has been estabilshed will influence the time it takes to heal and a number of massage sessions may be required – along with stretching.

More information about sports massage techniques applied to the outside of the thigh can be seen here:
