Rolling ankle

(2 discussions)

Hi,

I’ve been having trouble with my ankle rolling over on me. I had a first degree inversion ankle sprain in December and was told it wasn’t really anything to worry about, especially since it hardly bother me at all. Anyhow, when I was having physical therapy for shin splints a few months ago my physio watched me running and was able to tell that I had week ankles. She gave me some exercises to do along with the ones I was already doing for my shin splints. I did them for about three weeks until I started feeling a lot of weakness along the lateral sides of my legs, which prevented me from being able to dorsiflex during running.

I have been noticing that my ankle will invert when I’m walking in the grass or jumping on a trapoline but it doesn’t hurt at all. Is this anything to worry about? I’m thinking that inverting too much might cause the ligaments to stretch too much and may cause trouble with my running. Does anyone know of any ankle strenghtening exercises besides those using a theraband that may help me strenghten my ankles? Thanx!

Thanks for the reply. I tried balancing and I could barely get to 45 seconds! I guess it makes sense that poor propriception would be causing my problem. Thanks!

Sounds like you need to improve the proprioception of the ankles. Stand on one leg with your eyes closed and see how long you can balance on each leg. Aim for 2 minutes.
