rotator cuff and no insurance

Hello,thanks for reading.
I play a lot of volleyball and my rotator cuff has given me quite lot of pain in the last year or so.
I can’t sleep on my shoulder, hitting the ball hurts, etc.
I had an x-ray done, but they found nothing wrong.
I played volleyball about two weeks ago (abnormal for it to be so long ago), but my shoulder has started hurting for no reason now. And it hurts pretty bad–im taking max ibuprofen to quell the pain which gets rid of about 80% of it. I am currently without insurance, so I can’t see a doctor for about a 2 months.
I don’t want to hurt myself further, so my question is, can I do physical therapy at home, or should I tough out the next few months?thanks for any response anyone has! Thanks,Ben

Ben, I would recommend that you avoid volleyball for a while. It sounds like anti-inflammatories are helping. I would ice the shoulder region for the next 2-weeks for 15-30 minutes at a time, 3-5 times daily. I would only use your arm in a pain free range of movement. I would hug a pillow at night, and avoid sleeping on your shoulder. You should have a therapist check out your shoulder. You may have tendonitis. Your shoulder has a major inflammatory component involved that needs to calm down. Once you no longer have pain, you need to gradually strengthen your shoulder musculature in a painfree range. This problem will take some guidance. Good Luck. Brett, PT
