Runners Knee?

Can anybody help – I am training for the London Marathon, all was going well until I started running in the 10 – 15mile range. In two consecutive weeks at more or less the same distance my left knee became very stiff to the point where I could no longer run. There is dull rather than acute pain. If any thing it feels like the knee and an area 6 inches above and below is gradually solidifying! Walking causes no problem. The knee remains stiff and sore for the rest of the day(especially on stairs) and is still stiff the next morning but soon clears up as if it never happened. I tried a shorter run (stupidly?) two days after suffering as above and on that occasion the stiffness set in very quickly after about 2 miles. I am fearful of missing the Marathon. Does any one have any good advice?
