running with ankle weights

I have a 12 year old daughter who is a gymnast. Her gym makes them run in ankle weights ranging in weight from 1 /1/2 to 2 1/2 pounds. I remember when I was younger and our basketball coach had run in ankle weights until he was told by an othopedic surgeon that it was bad for the knees to run in them at which time we ceased using them. I wanted to know if this is bad for the knees. Several girls at the gym have develope knee problems.
