Ruptured Achilles questions

(6 discussions)

I’m 37 & ruptured my achilles playing squash in mid December, and had surgery 48 hours later.
I was in a fixed cast until last week & am now in a MC walker.
Have a couple of questions:1) I’m shocked by how ‘tight’ my achilles is, I find that I have almost no mobility ( < 10 degrees total range). The walker is supposed to stop me from moving past 0 degrees dorsiflexion, but I can't get anywhere close to this. Is that to be expected?2) I expected to start physio about now (and have insurance for this) but my surgeon wants me to wait until the end of month, which will be 10 weeks post surgery. This seems really long to me, esp because of how limited my range is. I'm curious when others started physio. My surgeon is really difficult to get info from, so I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks for any help!EricOttawa, CA

Hi ruptured my archilles tendon mid Oct. I has a hard cast for 2 months, then a walker for 6 weeks or so. Now I am doing therapy twice a week. Still tightness in archilles. I’m kinda looking for avenues to increase mobility and range. It has got better since walker but still need plenty more range. Would like to hear from you.

I ruptured my Achilles in mid November–surgery 2 days later, was in the hard cast for a month, then a walking cast until a week ago. I’ve healed really well (thus far), minimal tightnes where the scar tissue has formed. I go to the PT every 10 days or so, but I’m also going to the gym (& doing the same exercises from PT plus pool work) in between PT appointments. I’m currently working on rebuilding my calf and quad muscles–slowly, which is the toughest part for me. I’m using therabands to work on the muscle and ankle weights/leg lifts to work on building the rest of my leg muscles. The therabands have been great for range of motion and range–atrt with the easiest one, until it’s too easy, and then move forward. I can give more details on types of exercises if you need.To be in a hard cast for so long (for the August guy) seems excessive, though your surgery may have been more difficult than mine–as my tendon hadn’t really retracted at all. Maybe getting a second opinion would be good. Good luck.

———————————————Hi, I ruptured my achilles just yesterday. I haven’t had the surgery yet. Do you have any information that might be helpful if I were to follow it?

I ruptured my achilles on 2/28, had surgery the next day, and am on a cast til 4/11. Any kind of thought to how the rehabbing it will take? BTW I’m 24yrs old, and goes to the gym 3-4times a week, very difficult not able to work out. : 1) I’m shocked by how ‘tight’ my achilles is, I find that I have almost no mobility ( < 10 degrees total range).
