ruptured achilles tendon

(2 discussions)

Hi. I had surgery on 10/30 for ruptured achilles tendon (injured playing basketball) and will remain on crutches (non weight bearing) until 11/26. On 11/26 I will be able to weight bear and will keep the crutches for several more weeks as I slowly begin to take steps and advance with rehabbing the tendon. I am 41 years old, an active runner and sports enthusiast and have 2 young children. As you can imagine for someone like me this injury is quite the bummer…..My goal is to work through this and return to 100%.
I understand this rehabing will take time. I am motivated to work hard and follow a recommended treatment plan coordinating with my orthopedic surgeon and possibly physical therapist (the doctor said I don’t need PT…that he can provide me with all the exercises needed to recover).
Trying to get some idea of what your experience has been in dealing with this injury.
What types of treatment plans are typically followed, the time frames involved with progression and is it reasonable to expect (assuming a sound treatment plan that is closely adhered to)recovery to 100% within 6 months to a year?Any thoughts, comments and feedback you may have had in dealing with this injury would be appreciated. Thank you.Eric SwansburgTemporary Disabled Dad….

    Hi Eric,
I ruptured my achilles tendon on Dec 1, 2013,and I am getting cleared to bear weight on my leg, (with a walking boot) on the 9th of February.. Did you get any info from anyone? Can you tell me how your recovery is going? I am 29 years old, and I ruptured my right achillies doing a kickboxing class I am getting along much better, but it has been very hard, especially because I am very active. I have been doing exercises in a pool by my house… Have you been doing pool work? Any advice would help!
    Thanks, Martha Varela
