Sacroliac Joint Dsyfunction – Cortisone Injections

(9 discussions)

I am really disappointed. Just had my 2nd Cortisone injection into my sacroiliac joint, it has not worked. I had it done a month ago, so maybe I am being impatient. The pain is really getting me down and I can’t sleep. I am going to see an osteopath soon, although I have tried physio which didn’t help. Can anyone recommend any stretches/relief for pain in the joint, deep pain in the gluts, in the upper thigh and front shin? I regularly try to work out as sitting is the most painful thing to do. I do 45 minutes cardio a day, but have dropped to a low level, I stretch every day and do pilates/fitball. The pain is worse when I don’t exercise. can’t sit down, not even for 5 minutes. I have a Tens which sometimes help and take painkillers (which don’t really work). Anyone have any stretches for gluts/hips/lower back and thigh – I do some standard ones, but any advice would really appreciate – am getting v. down.

Thanks

Hi there, thanks for your reply.I am seeing a pain management doctor and he was the one who did the cortisone. My back is slightly better but I will go ahead and have one last cortisone but in my lumbar facet joint. I am seeing a back speciliast tomorrow night for a 2nd opinion to make sure its definitely not my disk causing the pain (although I don’t think it is). Thanks again. Molly

Opps…that last reply was blank! Still learning how to use this…sorry!

Anyway, to respond to your SI pain concerns…I don’t know if you have the type of Dr. I saw for a similar problem over where you live, but it might be helpful for you to try accupuncture/nerve block injections. The Dr. I saw was a “pain management” specialist. I had left hip pain for years, tried all kinds of chiropractors, physical therapists, used Tens (helped quite a bit), pain patches, etc. The combination of the accupuncture and nerve blocks worked the best along with doing step exercises to strengthen the hip joints. I also had MRIs that only showed a 2mm disc bulge at L 4/5. Initially, the problem was diagnosed as bursitis, then a year later extended into my low back, upper hip. Now, it hardly ever bothers me…latest problem is the knee!!

    Hope this helps…

Thanks, funny as last night I booked an appointment with an Osteopath. I am seeing her in 10 days time, but in the meantime she says no more hard gym work, just cycling and walking every other day, and to cut out the swimming every day. She also told me do Pilates once a week only and no work on the Swiss ball. She also told me not to put my Tens machine on my back! I am pleased I have an appointment. I need to see someone – thought Osteopath would be better in my case than a Chiro as I have a lot of pelvic history and illness.

    Thanks for your post.

go see an osteopath or a chiropractor, they will have better luck with your back than cortisone or physio!

Hi, my SI joint is still v. painful. However, I am now 5 months pregnant. Because of my previous SI and back history I have been advised by my pain specialist and osteopath that a casearean section is best, however my GP thinks its best I go for a normal birth. Any ideas? My sciatica has been a nightmare since being pregnant. Am still exercising daily but taking it easy.

Any advice on pregnancy/C SEctino would really help.
    Thanks

I used to have problems with my sacroilliac when I was 18, had to stop running competitively and went to numerous specialists all to no avail. Eventually, out of desperation I went to see this guy who was recommended to me by an old woman. He worked on me for a few weeks with no progress, using some sort of reflexology techniques. He told me that there was nothing else he could do for me and to stop coming to see him. A couple of weeks later the problem I had for two years was gone for ever and I haven’t had this problem since.

I was diagnosed with a hypermobile right SI joint and a locked left SI jt along with degenerative disc disease in L5-S1. My right glute hurt all the time. Went to PT for 8 months – didn’t help the SI but helped the DDD. Found a sports med dr who said “stop doing the exercises that irritate it.” Sounds elementary, but I stopped doing any exercise with my feet externally rotated, lightened up on the weights, stopped jumping rope and experimented with every exercise to see what helped and what hurt. Here’s what worked for me: Walking lunges – great, any other kind of lunge – can’t do, abduction/adduction machines – great but had to build up and make sure feet were aligned, glute exercises – great had to build up, lots of ab work -great, stretch Iliotibial band and glutes/low back in between as many exercises as possible. Hope something in this was beneficial to you……..
