Saphenous Nerve

(3 discussions)

I have what appears to be a swollen “cord” on the medial aspect of the knee. Touching this cord causes discomfort and sometimes severe burning pain beneath the patella. Bending the knee also causes the burning/cutting pain. I also experiance numbness of the skin surface over the knee.
I have had a cortazone shot into the cord area. The doc suggests arthroscopic surgery to investigate. ?Dx saphenous nerve entrapment? What would you suggest

I injured my foot while running about 6 weeks prior to the knee pain. I landed on a fist size rock causing pain across the top of my foot. The pain resolved after some manipulation by the physio during the investigation for knee pain. I do not remember any direct trauma to the knee.Should I be seeing an orthopedic surgeon or a neurologist for this problem? The swelling of the nerve as gone down a bit but touching causes discomfort under the knee and the severe pain is there when bending the knee too much. Do you think I am on the road to a (slow ) recovery or should there be some intervention? What is the prognosis ?

It means the saphenous nerve is entrapped by something. Did you have an injury recently or does your kneecap dislocate often? If it’s not getting better with any sort of treatment you may require surgery to “release” the nerve from whatever if compressing it.

:By injuring your foot may have thrown off the mechanics of the knee. I would suggest that you get it checked out. An orthopedist may be a good bet and he/she can direct you to the appropriate doctor. It’s so difficult to say what it might be without really doing any “hands on” and testing it. Good luck.
