Scaphoid fracture

(4 discussions)

Hii had got my hand plastered on the 5th of Feb late in the evenings, but my plaster became wet I removed the plaster myself on 9th Feb late evening. After that I did go to the hospital to get my hand examined and as suggested by the doc, I did an xray in the third week of Feb but the x-ray did not show any fracture. then in the fourth week of feb I had done an MRI Scan and the Scan did detect a fracture on the bone.On 2nd March I had my hand replastered for 2 weeks.Today after 2 weeks the bone specialist saw my hand and after removing the plaster got my hand re-xrayed and now the x-ray still shows a fracture. The surgeon suggests that a minor surgery is required to get the bone re-united since it has not yet united after 2 months of injuryNow the fact is that my hand has been in plaster for 1/2 week and then after a gap of 3 weeks it was replastered for 2 weeksHe says it is very difficult for the bone to heal in plaster & it would not make much of a difference. He did mention that the blood flow has stopped towards the bad part of the bone hence making it not possible to healPlease help. do you think that there is no other wayHave I waited too long now to avoid surgery

I fractured my scaphoid several years ago. There were two scaphoid specialists in my city. One apparently always recommends surgery. I did not see him. The other one says a lot of scaphoid injuries heal themselves and a pin is not necessary. After 7 weeks in a cast, the bone had healed (although it was still sore). I suggest seeing another specialist before surgery – ask your GP who is less likely to operate and then see what that guy says.

I fractured my scaphoid on 11/30/03…was in a cast for 14 weeks…lucilky the fracture line finally disappeared (but there was no signs of healing after 9 weeks)… I am now in a removable splint for 4 more weeks…then I go back to the doc… So just b/c 2 months have gone by, does not mean it cannot go to union …however, it all may depend on where the fracture occured…mine was stable, non displaced at the waist…plus it was on my left hand (i am right handed)… So I was able to manage…bottom line : Hi: I had got my hand plastered on the 5th of Feb late in the evenings, but my plaster became wet I removed the : plaster myself on 9th Feb late evening.: After that I did go to the hospital to get my hand examined and as suggested by the doc, I did an xray in the third week of Feb but the x-ray did not : show any fracture. then in the fourth week of feb I had done an MRI Scan and : the Scan did detect a fracture on the bone.: On 2nd March I had my hand replastered for 2 weeks.: Today after 2 weeks the bone specialist saw my hand and after removing the plaster got my hand re-xrayed and now the x-ray still shows a fracture.: The surgeon suggests that a minor surgery is required to get the bone re-united since it has not yet united after 2 months of injury: Now the fact is that my hand has been in plaster for 1/2 week and then after a gap of 3 weeks it was replastered for 2 weeks: He says it is very difficult for the bone to heal in plaster & it would not make much of a difference. I would go and get a second opinion. If the MRI and X-Rays you had done before you went to the doctor the last time were ok, it sounds like this doctor just wants to get another patient under the knife…

I am recovering from scaphoid surgery. This is the most agonizing thing that has happened to me. I’m hoping for an successful recovery. Can you tell me what to expect.. Is there PT involved..? Is there anything to avoid?
