Scaphoid fracture

12 yo daughter just finished casting for 6 weeks in long arm cast for scaphoid fracture (finally DX and treated 1 month post injury) now in short arm cast 6 more weeks. Seems to be healing. Very athletic and wondering if I should ask for PT referral if not mentioned after fracture healed. Have read about prolonged casting stiffness etc.

Kathe,Yes, you should definitely get a referral to a therapist for your daughter! My advice would be to try and get a referral to an Occupational Therapist (OT), as they specialize in the rehab of upper extremities. Both PTs and OTs have the same background and can treat any extremities, but since upper extremity rehab is what OTs specialize in, that would be your best bet…some OTs are additionally certified in “Hand Therapy”. Let us know how your daughter makes out.
