Has NUCCA chiropractic (no crunching) been considered? This technique may help avoid surgery. I would definitely try it – even if you are sceptical. Although I was not a candidate for surgery, it helped my scholiosis by leveling my hips and shoulders. I even stopped needing to crack my neck after 25 years of cracking it 2-3 times a day. You may not think it will help you, but if I were in your shoes, I would try anything before agreeing to surgery.
Here are a couple of sites you may want to look at I hope this helps.

I had the surgery for scoliosis when I was 14. I am now 37. I have 2 herrington rods (steel rods), wires and pins in my back. They had to chip bone from my hip to fuse into my spine. My back is straight but I have constant pain in my lower back. If I wouldn’t have had the surgery I would now have been in much worse condition without it. My spine would have kept turning and would have effentually affected my lungs. My spine was turned quite a bit and I had a right rib hump on my back. Maybe today they have other treatment that may help you instead of the surgery but back then (23 years ago) everything was different. You should ask the doctors about any alternatives and also ask them what would happen to you without the surgery. Get an opinion from a few doctors if you can before you make a decision. I was only 14 at the time and my Mom asked alot of questions and found out the consequences of not having the surgery before she agreed. I went to Shriner’s hospital. It’s a children’s hospital but I’m sure they can direct you. http://www.shrinershq.org

I had the harrington rod surgery to correct a double curve over 30 years ago and would strongly suggest thst you get the correction that you need. I am an active 45 year old mother of three boys, and besides a few aches and pains( that almost everyone complains about anyway) have had no negative side effects. My 14 year old son has it now and we will consider the surgery for him as well. The treatment is much more advanced today that when I had my surgery, and should be considered the best alternative, I also know people whose parents chose not to have the surgery and they have many more health problems today than I do and some of them are almost crippled. Please trust your doctor’s advice.

I too have scoliosis. I wore a straightening brace, but it appears not to have worked in my case. I was discovered to have this at the age of 4. I wore a brace until the age of 13. The scoliosis didn’t get any worse and I was discharged from check ups at age 16. I have lived with mild pain since then. I’m now 26. I have just requested a check up and took the appointment up. It was discovered that I have a small cavity in my spinal cord but nothing worth worrying about. Again I have been discharged. So basically i’m back to square 1. If they have to operate near then spinal cord, this gives risks of parrallysis. As my opinion is that the spinal cord is the main functioning source of every limb in your body.

I have just been diagnosed for having scholiosis. I had a bad car accident 5 months ago, and have had back pain ever since. I thought I was a very lucky person up until the accident as I have never had any troubles with my back. I went to Physio after the accident and my back was very tense and muscles were very tight. The pyshio notice a slight curve in my lower back and asked if I had scholiosis, but I was tested when I was 12 and did not have this at the time. A few months went on, and I was very sick and had constant body pain, so the doctor thought I should have some x-rays to see if anything had been caused by the accident and this is when they discovered my curviture in the spine. I’m 21 years old now. My scholiosis is a bit higher than what average people get. I was reading about other peoples forums and would like to know what sort of surgery can treat this, as I have not been told by my doc or physio, and would this be available in Australia?

I am 28 yrs of age I had surjery at age 11… I’m just wondering how long can a rod last in your back? Also I have only small problems when I stand or sit for a long time. But at the same time, I try not to curse myself with complaints and try to be thankful with God for myself in everyway… Please let me know if I need to do a follow up with a doctor for a check up or is it necessary? just curious b/c I was watching the discovery channel (surgery saved my life)… It just brought back memories..very emotional… Haven’t seen a doctor since surgery but I have been to doctors for physical exam for jobs…

My surgeon advised me to get x rays done to ensure the rods haven’t moved too much. She said a few degrees difference would not harm me.

I had rods put in place about 24 years ago but I was wondering if there is anything at all that can be done to try and improve the disfigurment to the right of my rib cage. I am finding it very difficult to find clothing that hides this and it really effects my confidence and prevents me from doing a lot of things which I would like to do.
