Schooling

(2 discussions)

My name is Alicia and I am really confused. I am about to be a junior at Western Michigan University. Currently my major is athletic training, but I have been thinking of going into exersize science. Mostly because I would like to go to grad school for physical therapy. We don’t have a physical therapy program here so which route would you recomend I take to get to my goal of being a physical therapist? I really need an opinion of someone who knows, because ever since I started school I have not gotten much help. I need to know so that I don’t get too far behind. If I switch I can still get an internship in a PT office, if I stay with AT then I would have to let that and all the fieldwork take up my time and I would be even more behind with PT. Please Email me back and give me your advice anyone. thanks.

If I were you, I would think long and hard before switching majors to PT. All of the PTs that I know are fed up with the profession, especially because of insurance reimbursement changes, and excessive paperwork. They are now working longer and harder than ever to make a decent living. They cannot treat their patients like they want to because the insurance companies are cutting down the allowed number of visits and modalities which they will pay for. You might want to either stay in Athletic Training (a still small, but rapidly growing profession) or consider something like the Physician Assistant program. Pharmacists are also really in demand, and they get paid very well.

I wouldn’t necessarily listen to the other response you got. I would take it to heart, because it is true that PT’s are fighting for a lot of things right now, but PT is a rewarding field and if you are willing to work hard then you will enjoy the benefits you will reap from it. I’m only a student still so I can only speak from what I’ve heard from other PT’s, but the word is that it is worth it.
