sesamoidectomy

(4 discussions)

Background: 23 year old femald.
I fractured my sesamoid at age 20.
It was misdiagnosed until about a month ago.
Since then I have had a steroid shot, foot inserts, and steroid pills.
Now I am on crutches and in a surgical shoe.
The doctor has said that my bone is dead and basically my only chance at treatment is surgery.
I’m having the sesamoid removed on May 5th.
I have done a lot of research and what I’ve found is beginning to scare me away from surgery. Can anyone tell me of a personal experience dealing with this surgery?Doctor, do you recommend surgery for someone as young as me?
Am I likely to encounter more foot problems in my later years?
Thanks all for any advice, Debbie

Also, I should mention that it is the sesamoid on the outside of the foot. looking down at my right foot, it is on the left.

It’s the Tibial one I believe. It’s the one on the outside, closest to my other foot.

While I can not comment on your specific situation, removing this bone is a well known surgical procedure.
